Phone is super slow: how to speed it up without formatting

A smartphone that slows down over time is a common problem — it doesn't necessarily mean it's broken or needs replacing. In most cases, a few adjustments are enough to regain speed without losing data and without resetting the device.
1. Restart the device The first step is also the most underrated. A full restart closes all background processes, frees up RAM, and often fixes sudden slowdowns. If you never restart your phone, start here.
2. Free up storage space A smartphone with nearly full storage slows down significantly. The operating system needs free space to work properly:
- Go to Settings → Storage and check what's taking up the most space
- Delete duplicate photos and videos, or move them to the cloud or a PC
- Uninstall apps you don't use — every installed app consumes resources even when it's not open
- Clear the cache of the heaviest apps — on Android, go to Settings → Apps → select the app → Storage → Clear cache
3. Reduce visual effects Animations and graphic effects consume processor resources. Turning them off or reducing them gives a noticeable improvement, especially on older devices:
- iPhone: Settings → Accessibility → Motion → Reduce Motion
- Android: Settings → Developer options → reduce or disable the animation scales (on Samsung and Xiaomi the path may vary)
4. Check background apps Some apps keep running in the background, consuming battery and resources even when you're not using them — automatic updates, syncing, notifications. On Android, check Settings → Battery to see which apps use the most resources and limit the unnecessary ones.
5. Check the battery's condition A heavily degraded battery can cause slowdowns — the operating system automatically reduces processor performance to prevent sudden shutdowns when the battery can no longer supply enough current. On iPhone you can check battery health under Settings → Battery → Battery Health. On Android it depends on the manufacturer.
When slowdowns point to a hardware problem If the phone is still slow after all these steps, the problem could be hardware — damaged internal storage, processor overheating, or a heavily degraded battery. In these cases, a professional diagnosis is the right next step before deciding whether to repair or replace the device.
