iPhone green screen or lines: cause and fix

Vertical lines, a uniform green tint, half the screen off, or areas that don't respond to touch. These are classic symptoms of an iPhone display problem — and they don't always mean you need a new device.

The most common causes

Physical damage to the OLED panel A drop can damage the OLED panel internally even without cracking the outer glass. The display looks fine from the outside but is compromised inside — lines and abnormal tints are the sign that the panel has been damaged.

Loose display connector The flex cable connecting the display to the motherboard can loosen after a drop or impact. If the problem comes and goes, or the anomalies change when you gently press the back of the phone, that's a sign the connector isn't seated properly — in this case, a display replacement isn't necessary.

Factory defect On some iPhone models, Apple has activated free repair programs for display issues. It's worth checking the official Apple website to see if your model and serial number fall under an active program before going ahead with a paid repair.

Extreme temperature OLED screens are sensitive to intense cold — in the mountains or on the slopes, low temperatures can cause temporary visual glitches. If the problem disappears as soon as the device warms up, it isn't a hardware issue.

What to do before bringing it in

  • Do a forced restart — on iPhone 8 and later: press and release Volume Up, press and release Volume Down, hold the side button until the Apple logo appears
  • Update iOS to the latest available version — some display issues have been fixed via software updates
  • If the problem persists after restarting and updating, it's almost certainly hardware
