Xiaomi won't charge: the USB-C port problem

If your Xiaomi or Redmi smartphone has stopped charging, or only charges in certain positions, the problem is often the USB-C connector. It's one of the most common faults we see in the lab — and in most cases it's fixable without having to replace the device.

How to recognize the problem These are the typical signs of a damaged or worn USB-C connector:

  • The cable goes in but there's play — it doesn't sit as firmly as it should
  • Charging only works when holding the cable in a specific position
  • The PC doesn't recognize the phone when connected via cable
  • Wireless charging works but cable charging doesn't
  • Charging is intermittent — it stops and starts again on its own

Why it happens The USB-C connector wears out with everyday use — plugging and unplugging the cable hundreds of times wears down the internal pins over time. Corrosion is another common factor, especially in humid environments or in the mountains, where temperature swings encourage condensation to form inside the port.

What not to do

  • ❌ Don't use toothpicks, needles, or sharp objects to clean the port — you risk bending the internal pins and turning a simple problem into a much more complex repair
  • ❌ Don't keep forcing the cable if there's play — it progressively worsens the damage
  • ❌ Don't use non-original chargers — they deliver current in an unregulated way and speed up wear on the connector

How we handle it Before any replacement, we assess the condition of the connector. If the problem is dirt or surface corrosion, professional cleaning with precision tools may be enough. If the pins are bent or the connector is physically damaged, we replace the component.
