Black screen, no response to buttons, no signs of life. Before you worry, know that in most cases a phone that won't restart has a simple, fixable cause. Follow these steps in order.
First: charge the device The most common cause of an unresponsive smartphone is simply a completely dead battery. Plug in the charger and wait at least 15-20 minutes before trying to turn it on — a battery at zero needs a few minutes to build up enough energy to even show the charging screen.
If nothing appears after 20 minutes, try a different cable and a different charger — a damaged cable can perfectly mimic a dead battery.
Second: try a forced restart If the phone is charged but not responding, the operating system may have frozen. A forced restart is a safe procedure that doesn't erase data and often solves the problem.
On iPhone
- iPhone 8 and later (including all USB-C models): quickly press and release Volume Up, then Volume Down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears
- iPhone 7 / 7 Plus: hold Volume Down and the side button together for 10 seconds
- iPhone 6S and earlier: hold the Home button and the top button together for 10 seconds
On Android
- Samsung: hold the Power button and Volume Down for 10-15 seconds
- Xiaomi / Redmi: hold the Power button for 10-15 seconds
- Google Pixel: hold the Power button for 30 seconds
If the forced restart doesn't work At this point the problem could be hardware:
- Completely drained battery — it can no longer hold enough charge to boot the system
- Damaged charging port — the phone isn't actually charging even though it's plugged in
- Internal hardware fault — motherboard or components damaged by a fall or moisture
In these cases, don't attempt further DIY procedures — you risk complicating an already delicate situation or losing the data on the internal storage.
