Phone is overheating: when it's normal and when it's dangerous

A smartphone getting warm during use is normal — it's a pocket computer processing data, managing connections, and powering a screen all at once. Heat is a natural byproduct. The problem arises when the heat becomes excessive, persistent, or comes with other symptoms.

When heat is normal It's normal for the phone to warm up during:

  • Intense gaming sessions or graphically demanding apps
  • Extended video streaming
  • Fast charging, especially with a case on
  • Background system updates
  • Use in very hot environments or direct sunlight

In these cases the phone warms up but cools down quickly once the activity stops.

When it's a problem Overheating becomes concerning when:

  • The phone gets warm even on standby, with no apps open
  • The heat is persistent and doesn't decrease even after closing apps
  • The device shuts itself off for thermal protection
  • Performance drops drastically — the processor throttles to limit heat
  • The battery drains much faster than usual

The most common causes

Degraded battery A worn battery generates more heat than normal during charging and use. Check battery health under Settings → Battery → Battery Health on iPhone, or through system settings on Android.

Background apps Some apps keep working intensively even when you're not using them, consuming resources and generating heat.

Charging with a thick case The case traps heat during fast charging, raising the temperature significantly.

Non-original charger Delivers current in an unregulated way, causing overheating during charging.

What to do right away

  • Close open apps and put the phone on standby
  • Remove the case to help dissipate heat
  • Move it to a cool environment — never a freezer or direct contact with ice, the thermal shock damages components
  • Don't keep forcing use while it's overheated

A case that needs immediate attention If you notice the back panel or screen starting to lift, that's not normal overheating — it's a swollen battery. Turn the device off immediately, don't charge it, and bring it in as soon as possible.
