I dropped my phone in water! What do I do now?

It happened — an accidental drop in the sink, sudden rain, the phone slipping into the pool. Panic is the first reaction, but the next few minutes really do make the difference between a recovered device and one lost for good.

In the first few minutes — do this now

  • Turn off the device immediately — this is the most important thing. Applying power to wet circuits causes short circuits and irreversible damage
  • Don't turn it back on for any reason, even if it seems to be working
  • Don't put it on charge
  • Don't press buttons unnecessarily
  • Gently dry the outside with a soft cloth or paper towel
  • Remove the SIM if possible — it removes one point of contact with the moisture

If it fell into seawater Salt water is more aggressive than fresh water because it speeds up corrosion of the circuits. In this case, before turning it off, briefly rinse it with cold fresh water to remove the salt — then turn it off and bring the device to the lab as soon as possible.

What never to do

  • ❌ Don't use a hairdryer or other heat sources — heat pushes moisture deeper into the circuits
  • ❌ Don't shake the device to get the water out
  • ❌ Don't open the phone yourself — without the right tools you risk further damaging the internal connectors
  • ❌ Don't put the phone in rice — it's a myth with no technical basis, it doesn't absorb moisture from the internal circuits

Why every hour counts Water corrodes circuits. The more time passes, the more moisture spreads inside and the more damage it causes. A device brought to the lab quickly has much higher chances of recovery than one left to dry on its own for days.

Bring the device to Dolomiti Repair in Santa Cristina Val Gardena as soon as possible. We have professional equipment for cleaning and drying internal circuits — in many cases recovery is possible and costs significantly less than buying a new device.
