You've cracked your phone screen. It happens — a fall, a moment of distraction, and the glass is shattered. Before you worry, know that in most cases it's a fixable problem, often the same day. The starting point is always the same: figure out exactly what's broken.
Not all screen damage is the same A smartphone screen is made up of several layers stacked on top of each other. Depending on which layer is damaged, the repair changes:
- Only the outer glass is broken — the display works correctly, you can see everything and the touch responds. The damage is cosmetic but still needs fixing: the broken glass exposes the inside of the device to dust and moisture
- The display is damaged — the screen is black, shows lines, spots, or areas that don't respond to touch. In this case the full display needs to be replaced
- Both — a hard fall or impact on a corner: broken glass and a compromised display together
Without opening the device and assessing it, it's impossible to know for certain what the real damage is — that's why diagnosis always comes before any quote.
What to do right after breaking your screen
- Don't apply pressure to the broken screen
- If there are glass shards, cover the screen with clear tape to avoid cutting yourself
- If the phone fell into a damp or wet environment, turn it off immediately and don't turn it back on
- Don't use the phone with a broken display for extended periods — the sharp glass edges can get further damaged
